CyberKnife Q & A
What is CyberKnife?
The CyberKnife system is a radiosurgery device mounted on a robotic arm that produces radiation to destroy brain tumors, vascular abnormalities, and functional disorders. The technology can also address tumors and lesions that develop in other areas of your body, such as your spine and major organs, like your pancreas and liver.
Dr. Duma uses image guidance cameras to locate the position of your tumor and deliver radiation beams from the CyberKnife into the tissue. The robotic arm allows Dr. Duma to deliver concentrated doses of radiation without exposing healthy tissue to the beams.
How does the CyberKnife treat tumors?
The CyberKnife delivers multiple radiation beams from different angles and targeting positions. These beams intersect at the area of the tumor, creating a high enough dosage to destroy benign and malignant tumor cells.
The robotic arm is an added benefit, allowing the radiation beams to reach areas of your brain and body that other radiosurgery systems can’t. It also allows Dr. Duma to complete treatment without you needing to wear a stereotactic head frame.
Depending on the size and location of your tumor, you may receive more than one radiosurgery treatment to ensure the best results. Dr. Duma creates a custom treatment plan based on your needs and relies on the results of a pre-surgery MRI to determine which areas to target with the beams.
In many cases, the procedure can take 1-2 hours, and you can expect to return home following your treatment.
What are the benefits of CyberKnife?
The CyberKnife is more efficient than other radiofrequency systems in the delivery of radiation beams. Dr. Dumas can use CyberKnife rather than open surgery and other technologies to treat conditions, such as lesions and inoperable or unreachable tumors. He can also treat multiple tumors in different locations of your body in just one treatment.
The benefits of treatment with CyberKnife include:
- Faster recovery
- Shorter hospital stay
- More comfortable treatment
- Less risk for complications
- Improved quality of life after treatment
